Past Guateques

2004:

The UFAHA proudly hosted the Inaugural Gator Guayabera Guateque at the Village of Merrick Park in Coral Gables, FL in May 2004. Special guests included Dr. J. Bernard Machen, President of the University of Florida, and Mayor Don Slesnick, of the City of Coral Gables. Over 300 alumni and students were in attendance at the celebration which included music, dancing, dominoes, dinner and more!

The UFAHA proudly announced that $10,000 was raised. As part of this gift, six undergraduate scholarships were created and awarded in honor of Colonel Glenn A. Farris, foreign student advisor at UF during the 1960’s and 1970’s, and Rafael and Fe Angulo, house parents for many Cuban and Hispanic students during the same period.

The alumni continued their success during the 2nd annual Guateque May 2005. They surpassed the first year's success, with the total donated being $18,500. This year also brought the first Gran Caíman award which was given to Juan Carlos Galan, 2005.

2006

The 3rd Annual Gator Guayabera Guateque was held May 2006 with close to 700 people in attendance. The net proceeds contributed to the University of Florida were $43,000.

With an increase in the demand of guests that wanted to attend the Guateque was moved from Coral Gables, FL to the Doral Golf Resort in Doral, FL. On May 12, 2007, the Guateque boasted close to 1000 alumni. The past one-day event was turned into a Gator Weekend Extraordinaire. The weekend included the inaugural Gator Golf Gathering with almost 150 golfers and the 4th annual Gator Guayabera Guateque. UF President J. Bernard Machen and George Edmondson, a.k.a. "Mr. 2-Bits," were guests of honor. Other special guests included, Coral Gables Mayor Don Slesnick (JD), Coral Gables Commissioner Chip Withers (BSBA 73) and UF Trustee Manny Fernandez (BSEE 67), who received the Gran Caíman award. The event generated almost $65,000, more than $20,000 more than the 2006 event.
